RUTH ELDER

Ruth Elder landed and signed the Parks Airport Register twice. Her first visit was on Saturday, August 3, 1929. She flew the Swallow she identified as NC8730. She left no hint of the purpose of her visit or if she was carrying passengers. She was eastbound from Santa Monica, CA to Kansas City, MO. Photograph, right, courtesy of site contributor Andy Heins.

Her second visit was August 24, 1929. This time we know the purpose of her landing. She was competing in the Women's Derby of the 1929 National Air Races (NAR). She identified her airplane as a Swallow, but did not cite a registration number. Chances are high that it was NC8730. She placed 5th in the class A event of the Derby.

Besides her two visits at Parks Airport, Elder landed once at Tucson and signed the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register Wednesday, August 7, 1929. This time she carried as her sole passenger James E. Granger. Their itinerary was westbound from El Paso, TX to Santa Monica, CA. The juxtaposition of the dates of her signatures in both Registers, and her directions of flight, suggest she flew to Kansas City to pick up Mr. Granger, then returned to Santa Monica via Tucson and Phoenix, AZ in time for the Women's Derby later in the month.

Ruth Elder was a movie actress, fashion model and aviation adventurer. She was known as the "Miss America of Aviation." She earned what was then a fortune (about $250,000) from personal appearances and two movies.

Ruth Elder's full biography is online at the Davis-Monthan Register Web Site at the link. Please direct your browser to her link to find additonal photographs, two video links showing her flying and demonstrating women's fashions, and downloads. She was a charter member of The Ninety-Nines. She was born September 8, 1902 at Anniston, AL and died October 9, 1977 at home in San Francisco, CA. She carried Private pilot certificate P675.
