GLADYS O'DONNELL

Gladys O'Donnell was a Charter member of the 99's (link has a nice biography) and she was a participant in the August, 1929 Women's Derby of the National Air Races (NAR).

She landed twice at Parks Airport. Her first visit was Saturday, August 24, 1929 as a participant in the NAR. Parks Airport was an overnight stop for the cross-country event that year. At the end, she won second place in the Santa Monica, CA to Cleveland, OH race with a time of 21:21:43. She earned $1,950 for her effort. Sister pilot Louise Thaden took first place.

She identified her airplane as a Waco, but did not enter a registration number. We know from the history books, though, that the registration was NC21M, a sleek taperwing model.

Her second visit to St. Louis was on Wednesday, September 9, 1931 at 9:50AM, also in NC21M. Based at Long Beach, CA, she cited her destination also as Long Beach. No purpose was listed in the Register for this landing, however the NAR that year ran from August 29-September 7, and she was probably on her way west from Cleveland. According to this REFERENCE for 1932, he did compete in the 1931 NAR and took first places in events 27 and 28, and 3rd place in event 29. She won a total of $2,850 for her efforts.

Besides her landings at Parks Airport, O'Donnell also landed and signed the Clover Field Register three times and the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register twice. Her full biography is online at the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register Web site at the link. Please direct your browser there for additional photographs, links and records of her other race activities.
