This airplane landed three times at East St. Louis. At each visit the pilot was Virgil C. Fichter. Fichter cited no passengers, or no reasons for any of his flights. He only noted "Haywire" in the remarks column of the Register at his last landing.
Fichter's first landing was on Friday, October 30, 1931 at 5:30PM. He arrived at Parks Airport from Quincy, IL. His second landing was on Thursday, November 12, 1931, on a round-robin flight from Quincy. The "Haywire" landing was a month later on Friday, December 11, 1931 3:45PM. This flight was a round-robin from and to East St. Louis.
NC12180 carried S/N 8085. A photograph of the airplane appears on the St. Louis University Libraries Digital Collections (SLU) below and at the link.
This photo is dated 1937, and the caption reads, "Parks College aircraft used for the Executive Pilot Program lined up on the runway outside of the Parks Hangar. (late 1930s)." The gentlemen standing by the airplanes are unidentified. Below, detail of the rudder showing the registration number. Notice the strung and pulled bow and arrow, which was the Stinson logo.
I could find no information about NC12180 at the Smithsonian. It is not registered with the FAA (12180 is assigned to a Cessna). I have no information about its later life or its ultimate fate. If you can help fill in the blanks, please let me KNOW.
