LOCKHEED VEGA Model 5 NC891E

Midland Air Express Timetable, June 10, 1931 (Source: Cited Link)

 

 

This airplane is a Lockheed Vega Model 5 (S/N 73; ATC #93) manufactured during May 1929 by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Burbank, CA.  It left the factory with a Pratt & Whitney Wasp B engine (S/N 1449) of 450 HP.  It was a five-place airplane.

 

It landed twice at Parks Airport. The first visit was between November 6 and 8, 1931 (the pilot did not enter a date in the Register). It was flown by W.A. Hansley, who cited his home base as Detroit, MI and his destination as Milford, KS. The second landing was also by Hansley, who cited the same home base with Chicago, IL as his destination. It is not certain if he carried passengers.

 

During 1931,the airplane was in service with Midland Air Express, a small airline using Lockheed Vega Model 5 NC891E and another Vega (NC195E) based at Kansas City, KS. The airline was in business for about a year from the summer of 1931.At left, from the link, a timetable for Midland Air Express passenger service. Register pilot George E. Halsey was the operations manager for Midland Air Express during 1931. Davis-Monthan Register pilot Robert W. Henderson was a pilot of the line.

 

Curiously, neither the eastern or western terminus of the timetable explains why 891E was going to Chicago or Milford, KS as cited by pilot Hansley. Possibly the airplane was on a charter flight off the schedule.

 

Besides its two visits at Parks Airport, NC891E also landed and is signed in the Register once at the Davis-Monthan Airfield. At the link you will find a detailed chain of custody for the airplane, as well as information about its fate.
