Sydnor Hall landed once at Parks Field. He signed the Register Saturday, May 29, 1929 as a competitor in the Gardner Trophy Race. Please direct your browser to the link to learn about the preliminaries leading up to the final race, as well as a tabulation of final results.

Hall placed first in his preliminary heat that originated in Jacksonville, FL and ended at St. Louis on May 29th. He flew the Travel Air he identified as NR6239. Photo, left, is his smile of victory after the preliminary race.

From this article by Terry Bowden (PDF 21 pages, 1.5Mb), "Sydnor Hall posted the third overall fastest qualifying speed (preliminary heat) at 143 mph in his Travel Air D-4000. 'The White Cow' as his plane was nicknamed had the factory 'speedwings' which Hall had modified by filling in the center-section cutout. Other modifications to this plane included a front cockpit enclosure, a N.A.C.A.- type cowling, and a pair of crudely fashioned wheel fairings. Hall, a Saint Louis pilot was a favorite of the local crowd."

The final race began the next day and was a round-trip flight of 468 miles from St. Louis to Indianapolis, IN. Hall placed second in the final. The final was described by Bowden as follows, "It was another 17 minutes before a black speck appeared on the horizon. This turned out to be Sydnor Hall, who had been the last to depart. Hall's elapsed time netted him a speed of 144 mph in his second place effort."

Below, Hall is either entering or exiting his airplane. Mr. Bowden says about the image, "This photo was taken by Jim Peterson on May 29, 1929 at Parks Airfield. This was the day [of] the Final event of the Gardner Trophy Race. ... The original box-camera print came to me from Arthur Berry Ease, Alton, IL. This was in the same collection along with 20 or so other photos from that same day. Berry received the photos from his friend, Mr. Peterson. Both had attended the race."
