LOUISE McPHETRIDGE THADEN

Louise Thaden, 1932 (Source: NASM)

Some years ago, I had a conversation with a WASP who knew Louise Thaden. Her description of Thaden was, "Low, fast, aggressive." Her aviation life reflects this description.

Louise Thaden landed and signed the Parks Airport Register once, on Saturday, August 24, 1929. She was participating in the 1929 National Air Races, and St. Louis was a waypoint on the Women's Derby from Santa Monica, CA to Cleveland, OH. Including Thaden, fifteen of the 22 women competing are signed in the Parks Airport Register that same day.

She identified her airplane as a Travel Air, but did not identify it by registration number. From the history books, though, we know that it was Travel Air 4000, NC671H. Interestingly, her airplane is logged again in the Clover Field Register on April 17, 1931 flown by E.B. Christopher.

Low, fast and aggressive, she won the 1929 Women's Derby. Her elapsed time from Santa Monica to Cleveland was 20:02:02 with an average speed of 135.97MPH. She won $3,600 for her effort.

Besides her landing at Parks Airport, Thaden also landed and signed once each the Clover Field, Davis-Monthan Airfield and Peterson Field Registers. Thaden's full biography is at the Davis-Monthan Register Web site at the link. Please direct your browser there for many additional photographs and links, and a career summary that cites her many achievements in aviation.

Louise Thaden was born November 12, 1905 at Bentonville, AR. She died November 9, 1979 age 73. She was enshrined in the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame in 1980.
