STEARMAN 4EX NC783H

This airplane was S/N 4020. It was operated by Standard Oil of California. NC783H landed once at East St. Louis, sometime between July 6th and August 2, 1932 (interpolated from the Register; the pilot didn't enter an arrival or departure date). It was flown solo by Harry E. Homeyer. For some reason Homeyer identified the airplane as a Curtiss Robin, but there never was a Robin registered as NC783H, and the airplane is signed twice in the Register of the Davis-Monthan Airfield, Tucson, identified correctly by make and registration number.

Below is a photograph of NC783H, courtesy of the San Diego Aerospace Museum Flickr Stream (SDAM). It wears a Resticted, "R," registration number.

Another photograph, dated August 1, 1930, is below courtesy of the Shipler Collection Negative Preservation Project of the Utah Department of Heritage & Arts (UDHA). Choose section 33 to find the image. This image captures two Register airplanes and at least one pilot on an overcast day.

I could find no information about 783H at the Smithsonian (left sidebar, top). This is probably because the airplane still exists. The FAA database documents that its registration lapsed May 18, 1965. At the time, it was owned by Mal Carberry of Fresno,CA, an aerial crop dusting operator. If you have any information about the whereabouts or condition of 783H now, please let me KNOW. Sister ship NC784H, on the left in the photo above, is on exhibit at the Canada Aviation Museum as documented at the link.

As mentioned above, NC/NR783H appears twice in the Davis-Monthan Register, flown by B.M. Doolin (who is visible in the photo above, second from right). Another photograph of NC783H is at the Doolin link. It also landed once at the Grand Central Air Terminal.
